Diploma

In many ways, it is a big deal, but not for most people. I finally got my BS diploma. Being that I’m thirty and I started going to college when I was seventeen means it took about thirteen years for me to graduate, but I did.

The last round took me a little over two years, when I was working at PRLH and they gave me a little discount. I got fired after the first quarter or so. I tried to ask for some help, to get the money to get through college, but my mother wasn’t capable of producing it (though she would promise she would) and my father… well, he basically said that he didn’t think I would go through with it and hinted that I’ve bad enough bad choices. And no money. So, I got somewhat annoyed at myself for even trying to ask him and got a student loan to cover college. I also did it as night school, working 2-3 days a week after work, so it took a very long time.

I managed to petition out of half of my classes, just because I’ve already done it. Two of the eight petitions were “prove you know Java” so I sent them about a quarter million lines of working Java code. Did a pretty good job of proving it. The others were harder, but after more than twenty years of small businesses, programming, administration, and everything else you do in a small company, it really wasn’t a challenge. The challenge was actually finishing, standing up and saying “I finish it.”

So, I’m proud of myself. It isn’t a bouncy excitement of my first novel getting published or the euphoria that I got when I asked Fluffy to marry me, but it is a deep, almost profound pride that I finished something that I started, despite the trials and struggles.

Conquences of Players?

What do you do when a player does something really stupid? In this case, we were playing Sepia Throne and the players found a chest with one of the last Angels of Destruction, also known as the nasty summoned creature that inflicts hundreds of health levels, creates tidal waves, and can carve up large islands in a matter of seconds. Not to mention, they can fly just a tad under Mach 40.

They got a little information about it. The demons said they would not let it into the Infernal Plains, three different demons mentioned this, including the tiny little demon who was sent to watch they wouldn’t. They even gave one of the Solars a popup book showing them how they would torture them if they did. This popup book showed up at least twice in the adventure.

The first time they let it out, the chest popped open and it spent a round in stretch, then attacked a Sidereal. It managed to perfect block it, but the angel cut the Sidereal and the island he was on in the next turn. Then, he started to blow away large hunks of the countryside until they managed to close the chest. When they did, the angel was dragged into it, but it used its sword to gouge an immense crevice in the earth in an attempt to not be pulled into the chest. Oh, yeah and the tidal waves it created in round three.

So, immense and massive destruction. So, what do you do?

About eight hours later, they encountered a group of demons, so they let it out again. This time, it threw a ball of pure Essence after the rapidly fleeing demon dragon and shaved off part of the world. And yes, I used the term, “shaved off part of the planet.” It was also harder to get the chest closed (75 successes needed instead of the original 50).

So, they decided that the destruction was really intense. And they spent a day helping the people who were almost destroyed when the repeated tidal waves took out every coastal town in the area (the Sepia Throne is mostly islands).

What next? They decided to wait until everyone responded, then open the chest again. This third time, they were in the middle of nowhere, and the only target for the angel was on the boat they were on. So, it decided that it had to destroy the boat. Unfortunately, I used deus ex machima to save them (a Yozi possessed one of the demons enough to save them), and there was a fight that involved them fighting to close the chest while the angel and possessed demon fought. The Sidereal who kept putting prayer strips on them to stop them didn’t help, but he died.

They managed to close the chest (100 successes needed this time). The tiny little posssessed demon managed to survive and they told it that they were luring everyone there so they could kill them, with the chest being the “prize.” So, the demon said “great, I’m the last survivor, you got everything, I keep the chest” then it opened up a portal to an unknown location to take the chest out.

Now, as a storyteller, I don’t like to say no. I like to say how hard things are. So, when Amethyst said she was going to open the chest as it was being dragged out, I let them talk about it. The end result was, she thought it was funny, so she actually opened it.

Okay, so I already told them the demon didn’t want the chest to go to the Infernal Plains, so why would it teleport there. So, obviously it was going to a place in Creation. An unknown place in creation. So, they opened the chest as it was dumped some place in Creation. And then they fled to the Underworld to be crushed by the special effects (they were on bedrock of the ocean in the middle of a nifty sword-shaped hole, where gravity hadn’t quite caught on).

Now, I pretty much described the damage capabilities and they were fully aware that the angel was highly descructive from the first three times. I knew where the possessed demon was able to portal two (only two places, the Infernal Plains or the demense/manse it is bound to, world mechanic they were told about). So, the demon portals an open chest to a place south of the Imperial City, with no one being aware that an angle of destruction was set loose.

It would be like those scenes where people are having a nice day, then all hell broke loose. Even in my best, most generous aspect, it took someone 2-3 minutes to tap people capable of doing it and close it. Given how I described the damage it could do it one turn (6 seconds), millions must have died. They even knew where it would go (through the Imperial City to the Demon Tree). They knew that the angel focused on demons and their influence and the two largest was the Imperial City (which had all the demon architecture and like from the Elemental War) and the Demon Tree (which sucked up demons). So, the entity incapable of precision attacks would have wiped out both of those in gouts of Essence and destruction.

Millions, if not hundreds of millions of people would have died from that.

So, what is a storyteller to do? I know I made a few mistakes, namely I shouldn’t have given them a big Pandora’s Box in the first place, but it seemed to fit the story. I hate having hurting players, but even in the best of worlds, the Sidereals are probably going to declare war on the party. Assassins and everything, but even the raw destruction that happened. One of the character’s daughters may have died (we don’t know yet), the defense systems of the empire may have been vaporized, and basically all hell will break loose.

The conquences of that action would be terrible for the players. I try to smooth of the edges, not to alienate the players or have them die outright, but I don’t think I can just push this one aside as it were.

Initiative System Proposal

I finally figured out that I had the components for my original initiative system. At first, I couldn’t figure out how to make it, but in the progress of working with Maximum Actions, I think everything fit together. And then I was explaining how the Exalted initiative system “appears” to work when it all clicked into place.

I think this will produce a good-quality combat system that has a nice flow to it. Of course, it depends on the votes and opinions of otehrs if I’m going to write it up completely. Overall, I like the idea (naturally).

I despise banks

I tried to get a savings account today at my bank, LaSalle. This annoyed me. I tried previously, but they said to avoid a minimum balance fee (I know how I bank), I had to have $2,000 deposit. Okay, so I got the $2,000 deposit and they forgot to mention, I also had to have $25,000 in the bank on accounts, but not the accounts I had. So, the $150,000+ for the mortgage didn’t count. No, I had to have $25,000 in the bank to avoid a fee on my account. Otherwise, I have to have $250 in that account at all times or they charge me fees.

And, I cashed my paycheck (only nine behind now) at Chase (formerly Bank One) and the rather rude lady there basically me to just give up being picky about my bank. I was complaining that Chase/Bank One only accept deposits at their ATM’s and nowhere else. “All banks are going toward this.” Yeah, except LaSalle which doesn’t charge minimum fees for mortgage owners (except on savings accounts, of course).

I need a good quality bank that doesn’t screw me over because I pump $100,000 a year through the bank, but have to drain my account, works through ATM’s, and doesn’t nickle and dime me for accidently going negative for a day (my credit union had a $25 fee and no overdraft).

Tomboy Manipulations

To help fightertype, who really wants Tomboy for Windows, I decided to submit a little patch that isolated the code that zbowling was having trouble with. It took about three hours to figure it out, but it moves the GConf code into a single file, which then makes it easier for zbowling to put in Windows-specific stuff and take out the stuff that only works on Linux.

All that work, just to make fightertype happy.

MfGames.Balance – Initial Editor

Worked on a little application last night (and the night before), so I could help organize the Balance development effort. The main reason I’m doing an application is that with the number of metrics, skills, and characters, it really is a good idea to have a structured input instead of worrying about format changes or a missing bold on a line. Sometimes, I suspect the amount of effort White Wolf and Wizards of the Coast do to make sure their charms and spells are in the correct format. Unlike them, I’m a single person so I don’t have the quality assurance they have.

So, I’m writing a program to do it. I already did it once, using Eclectic, but I was too ambitious about that program and it was getting unyieldly. So, this time I’m going to write a very specialized application that does one thing, supports my Balance development. I’m modelling it after Monodoc, which is a cool program, since it doesn’t have to be as fancy. It uses Gtk.HTML to render the display with edit buttons to switch to the editors. Since I’m not using the database back-end of Eclectic, it is also much faster and easier to work with.

Screenshot of Initial Screen

I’m doing the MVC approach, which will make it easy to reimplement the code that scans OpenDocument files (ODT in specific) and inserts the command. I still think that is the neatest library I’ve written at this point. It also is the part that makes it easier to say “insert Strength here” and have it automatically and consistently formatted.

Hopefully, this will be the last time I decided to rewrite this functionality.

Firefly Season 2

Well, they are still trying to get Firefly Season 2 out of the door, so they have a little web survey. Now, I didn’t hear about the show until after it was long gone and the movie was coming out, so I missed out on a lot, but I really like it. Of course, the theme song resonates nicely with me, which doesn’t hurt. So, if you are interested, fill out the survey:

And you don’t have to give personal information, which is good. :)

Garbage Man

This morning, I was getting ready to leave and I normally take out the garbage. However, today the garbage man came out early and he was about to leave. But, he was really sweet and waited until I got mine out (even grabbed a bag that fell in my driveway). Then, he drove down and gave someone else a chance. So, I have to give a little blessing to the garbage man of Carpentersville, IL.

Student Loans

I just finished my last class at Capella in December. Wonderful goal in my life, and it only took fifteen years to get a degree. Of course, I couldn’t get help from my family on this second attempt, so I did it through student loans and the such. Well, at the end of the class, you are required to go through loan counseling which is a glorified website that says you have to repay it. At one point, they have a question that basically says, “Do you want more information on a consolidation program?” And your choices are: “Yes, by phone”, “Yes, by email”, and “Yes, by letter” Notice what they don’t let you choose, no. In my case, the loan is only about $15k dollars, so I was planning on just paying it off and not going through the extra hassles of consolidating it since I can (mostly) afford to handle it.

So, yesterday, I got the letter talking about the student loan consolidation and it just set me off again. Not to mention, I’ve been getting 1-2 of these every couple of days. I think student loan conslidation is good business for someone, and it isn’t me.

Formatting and Parsing Dates

Worked a bunch more on MfGames.Culture. Got it to parse a date string, such as “2006-01-23″ and come up with the properly Julian Day. Also got it to take that JD and produce a formatted result and it worked! I now have the basics for a fantasy calendar set up. Of course, it occured to me that the IFormula is integer based when it has to be double-based for the time of day, but that is an easy fix. So, I’m very happy with myself, it works.
