Working on Muddy Reflections

I spent most of the weekend being sick. However, I also spent some of Thursday and Friday working on Muddy Reflections. It was hard at first, I’m not used to writing in the character of Mudd. I mean, he is strict, passionate but not really expressive, and he is detail-oriented. With this write, some of his other personality traits are coming to fore. He doesn’t really like dealing with politics, but he also associates better with the other mages. I think that kind of builds up why other guards don’t like him and why they don’t always call the foresics mage to the scene, which give it an interesting contrast. It will also make the stuff with Constable Silsdoth more interesting, because he doesn’t associate with other guards.

It’s interesting writing this story, not only because it is dredging up memories, but also because it is so different from my normal writings that it really makes me think. Though, people grin and sigh too much. :)

On the other hand, I have come to the pure and simple conclusion that writing magazines (which I have bought a total of four now) are like beauty magazines. They really give you the impression that if you try, you might be able to get published. But, there is this sense of desperation in those words, something I don’t really like. It almost gives me the idea that “you aren’t good enough and look at everyone else who is.”

On the other hand, the chapters are beginning to flow again, which makes me happy.

Laser Pointers

For the first time ever, I got a laser pointer. It was one of those $9 thingies you can get at the pet store. I was looking forward to playing with the pets, everyone else’s chases the pointer all over the floor. Mine… well, they stare at it for a few seconds, then go back to licking all the fur off their bodies.

Me, on the other hand, loves the pointer. I’ve been tracing ceiling joints, seeing how far away I can see it. My favorite is just staring at the little dancing motes in the light. My physics teacher said he’s explain it, but then I dropped out before hearing the answer. But, it is just so much fun to play with.

It last almost 16 days before I ran the battery out. My friends have laser pointers that worked for months, but apparently they don’t write letters on the ceiling of the bedroom when you are suppose to be sleeping. Oh well, I’ll get new batteries because, frankly, they are just so much fun!

Back from the Wedding

I actually had a pretty good time. The drive up there wasn’t too bad, but that was because Fluffy drove. She also drove back, so I can’t argue at all about that. The wedding itself was nice, they were worried about the weather being bad, mainly because it was snowing but it ended up being just about perfect, though it got cold during the eating bits.

We had some pretty interesting wedding party photos. Including climbing up on a few bridges, posing by a waterfall. It took a couple hours to complete and my feet were sore. They got even more sore after dancing, which apparently surprised my brother because he didn’t know I liked dancing so much.

Fluffy wasn’t feeling well, so we ended up going home as soon as we woke up on Saturday. Spent the rest of the day driving and just trying to help her, she hurt her hip and was rather sick.

It was nice seeing family though. Susan and Jerry want us to visit next year and I think I’ll make time for that. Its been a few years since I was in Colorado and I like that state a lot. Not as much as Iowa, of course, but it is still a pretty good place. Seeing all the cousins was great too, I haven’t done that in a year and before that… well, it was a very long time.

Being with family is still a new thing with me. Fluffy brought me a bit close to my own family because I wouldn’t actually visit or think about them really, except when it came up. Being a “lost cousin” in a way pointed out that they do remember me, even if I don’t always remember them. Kind of strange, and one of those things that I’m struggling through. Seeing Fluffy and how tight she is with her family is kind of like looking a family in a different country for me, everything is so strange and so… different.

Things to think about, I guess.

Started on Muddy Reflections

Last night I started the process on Muddy Reflections, at least to consolidate the three short stories (only one is on the main site http://moonfire.us/). Even if you read Murder on Piscrest, I’m going to be changing it significantly enough that you probably won’t know who did it or how it fits in with the novel. I’m not worried about that.

The story came out to 54k words. My goal is about 100k, so I need to add a small block. If it came out to just writing, I can do 10k words in a day, but that never happens. :) Too much editing involved.

I figured it will take about month to get the story ironed out and cleaned up, the short stories broken into their components and expanded on. I also want to add a link to the original story idea, the prostitute murder, which I am not planning on resolving in the novel, but since Mudd obsesses about it for every single story, I figured it was something important to expand on slightly.

Killing Turf Wars

I can’t do Turf Wars. I think the ideas is great, the images and I’m more than capable of doing it, I just don’t seem to be making the time to do it. For the last two weekends, Fluffy has been out of town, so I thought to myself, what a perfect time to work on Turf Wars! Eight days of no distractions, plenty of time to figure out some bugs and mayb make it start to resemble a game.

What I did instead of write stories, play Exalted, and relaxed. In itself, I wouldn’t have been bothered by it, but that is the same thing I’ve been doing for two months on the project. I basically haven’t touched it since before GenCon.

Also, at GenCon, I got Mr. Helfers interested in my Mudd Fournier novel (working title is “Muddy Reflections”). I already have the major parts written, I just need to merge the two short stories and novella together, change how they all end, and basically package it. Doing that, I know I can do. Writing isn’t a struggle for more, not like writing games is.So, while I’m going to stop on Turf Wars, I am going to work on a project I know I can do and want to do. It is due at the end of the year (Helfers looks at novels only in January, as I mentioned in the WBM entries).

It will also give me a chance to play with Triumph for fightertype. I know she would like to see Itrifore’s world done up properly at some point, so I’ll aim for that also. Both of those are things I’m much more comfortable with and maybe I won’t find myself doing “everything but.”

Seltzer Water

Two months of almost cutting soda entirely out of my diet. At the moment, I’ve managed to get it down to about one can a week, compared to 2-3 cans a day. Of course, I replaced it with seltzer water, but compared to the Diet Coke before, I’m sure it much healthier.

I don’t normally view my political views on the blog (or haven’t yet), but I really think it is important that everyone who can… votes. I don’t care if you vote Republican, Democrate, Cheesemongers, just vote! If you don’t vote, you really deserve everything you have and lose the right to even complain about whoever was elected.

Finished Fable last night

Actually, I crushed the final part of the game. Because of my gaming style (power level at the beginning to cruise later) worked out really well in the game since I managed to max myself out fairly early, found a neat trick to get through the stages. So, in the end, I pretty much defeated the boss in a nearly perfect victory. And that is with bypassing almost every major fight in the last two hours by using the force shield and running like a bunny.

There were some really nice things I liked about the game. The character’s appearance updating was very nice, even as just a logical expansion on showing equipment on a person. The levels were lovely and the mix of style was nice. The stages where you had to sneak around the bad poetry guard was cute. :) I wasn’t impressed with the demon doors in general, they were more in the way than anything else and by the time I got to them, I already had much better equipment (excluding the cutlas).

I mentioned a few other good things before, so I won’t go too much into that.

Some other things jumped up as being ‘bad’ ideas in a game. The first is the whole World Save verses Hero Save. When you are in a mission, you can’t save the position, just the stats and your inventory. When you leave the mission (by any means), you keeps your skills, inventory, and everything, but you start the mission over and any equipment that you picked up goes back. This leads to a case where I ended up cheating because I could start the mission and get a really nice item in about 10-15 seconds. Then, restarting, you can do the same. Yeah, they had something to prevent that (probably a cheat counter from appearances), but still, just give them the ability to save and let them keep on going.

That save thing got really annoying in one mission that took about 1.5 hours to finish. I wanted to have dinner, but I couldn’t turn off my computer or stop for the night because I would have to start all over again.

The only other thing I didn’t care for is the controls. LMB to attck, RMB to run or power attack, but S-LMB to cast spells. It got really hard to coordinats all the keyboard stuff with the mouse and I screwed up more than occasionally. Being able to remap everything would have been really nice and being able to map it to a joystick (I have a XBox 360 controller for my machine) would have been perfect.

Fable

I spent part of the weekend (Sunday) and most of last night playing Fable. I’m getting close to the end of the game and I’m getting to the point where I’m actually hoping to see the end of it. I managed to max out my character and got to the big moral decision. Then… there ended up being more of the story. That mid-game “twist” always gets me, mainly because I keep feeling that I just want it over, then there ends up being more of it.

Of course, I found an in-game way of handling most of the fights, so I’ve been doing pretty good in the game. I went the entirely “good” route (except for two sacrifices for a bow) and I can’t wait to finish the game in the next day or so. Then, I’m going to keep Oblivion and Rachet and Clank on the shelf for a few days, maybe to work on Turf Wars.

There are some things I really like about the game. The acceptance of other sexualities is nice (straight, gay, and bi), but also how the character changes his appearance over the game. Of course, my specific little guy seems to be heavily cut and scarred, with bright blue eyes and a little halo over his head. Still, a fun game.
