Um…

I was kind of waiting for this, and yet dreading it at the same time. I checked my mailbox today and found a nice big envelope from Open Book Press. Since they already rejected Muddy Reflections, I was wondering if they rejected my second query letter and not the submission. The envelope was my submission, all 19 pages of Courier-goodness with the same rejection letter as before.

For some reason, my heart said that the first letter wasn’t for the submission itself. And this is the case where they actually looked at it and rejected it. They also sent back the SASE untouched, do you not send a SASE when they ask for a sample part?

I eagerly paged through the submission themselves. Maybe I’d get some feedback on the first three chapters, being that I was told to make it double spaced and bind it in a format to make it easy to check.

Nope.

The only thing inside was a single post-it note that said “good”. This confuses me. I mean, I know its a rejection and two for the price of one submission, but the “good” leaves me with just a shard of hope that maybe they didn’t mean to reject me. Yeah, a dream, but it is still there.

Regardless, someone there thought Muddy was good. So, that gives me hope that I still have a chance to publish it. I should send out another series of query letters, but maybe next week; I’m hoping to get some feedback from someone on the novel in the next couple of weeks and see what changes I need to make.

Until then, just keep writing!

I’m Purple!

This did not surprise me. :)

What color is your soul painted?

Purple

Your soul is painted the color purple, which embodies the characteristics of sensuality, spirituality, creativity, wealth, royalty, nobility, mystery, enlightenment, arrogance, gaudiness, mourning, confusion, pride, delicacy, power, meditation, religion, and ambition. Purple falls under the element of Earth, and was once a European symbol of royalty; today it symbolizes the divine.

Spent last night working more on BooGame. It’s getting there, but the problem when you have two libraries very tightly tied together is that it takes a lot to abstract one away. I just hope the decisions I’m making and what I’m doing is going to make CuteGod more stable (it crashes a lot on Windows and I can’t use it on Linux lately).

Going to be an interesting weekend. Going to a comedy club tonight with Fluffy and Evyl. Tomorrow I have gaming, which should be leading into the final bits of Arc 3. Trying to organize the plots a bit more using FreeMind. Maybe this will be the Ultimate Plot Management Tool, I’ve been seeking. Heh, I’m also looking for the Ultimate Map Management Tool but haven’t found one yet.

Programming Hard

Feel a bit better today. Last night, I worked on the comic script a bit and added an atom feed. Still need to figure out how I want to move forward with this project, since I suspect I might be doing another web comic some day or… I want to productize it to make it easier for others to use it. I mean, might as well let others use what I insist on rewriting, right?

I also worked on BooGame last night. This is for CuteGod but I need a better window backend and I figured I’d make it more flexible as part of the process. Mr. Loach said it was okay to do what changes I’m making, since I’m apparently the only one using the library right now. Mainly, I just want to get it off my TODO list before 4E6 or NaNoWriMo kicks in. That and I think it is a really fun game, I just have to keep on trucking to finish it before I lost interest. I mean, I’ve been trying to finish a computer game since I was six (when I first learned how to program) and that was a long time ago (I’m 32).

Fluffy is leaving on Sunday for her vacation. So, ten days of me being alone, obsessing. I suspect, I’m going to be programming and writing a lot. There are a couple short stories that I need to finish up and get me back “in the groove” as it were for NaNoWriMo and Case of the Morning Zombies.

Fightertype once mentioned that I update my journal too often, which is why she doesn’t really read it. I wonder if that is true for most of you, do you just pass on by since I’m so damn wordy?

Money, money, money :(

Getting tight around here. I will admit, I’m getting a bit angrier than I normally do, and part of it is my fault. Apparently, along with everything else, insurance didn’t cover a couple doctor’s visits and I missed too many payments on my electrical bill, so they are asking for two months now. So, gotta juggle a few more things. One of those points in life, but it gets really frustrating. I also know that I just need to have faith, it always works out in the end, its just getting there that hurts.

I told my boss that I would look for another job if she ever caused me to miss a mortgage payment. Of course, what do you do when she’s three months late on paychecks but got us three full paychecks in July? Is it late? Part of me is beginning to really hate not having consistent money. Yeah, it looks like I shouldn’t have done this home improvement project or the vacation, just as part of me also says I shouldn’t let Fluffy go on her vacation, but I don’t want to keep on saving money in terror of not getting paid for another month or two. August was one of those months, actually, one paycheck and almost no money coming into the company.

It’s my responsibility to make sure I can pay my bills, even when I don’t get paid consistently. This is just a case where I planned poorly and assumed things that didn’t happen. So, I’m beating on myself almost as much as her. That, naturally, doesn’t make me all that pleasant to be around.

At least she isn’t going on vacation with my paycheck.

Submissions I noticed…

At GenCon, I saw a call for submissions for East Asian-based settings, folklore, and history. Looks like a lot of fun plus the quality of the books looked pretty interested. I grabbed their Sails and Sorcerery book which is on my Read and Review list.

I also noticed a call for cliche lycanthrope stories from someone’s livejournal blog. Can’t remember who, but this is one of those “if you don’t hear from us, you didn’t make it” type of call.

And, thre is also the Wizards of the Coast Discoveries call for submissions. That looks like a very good one, for novels, and I’m planning on doing NaNoWriMo to write it. So, it looks like my next novel is going to be in 1.5 months. I’m actually pretty excited, though I’m aiming for 100k words instead of the minimum 50k. I just need to clear a lot more off my plate before that.

I’m anxiously awaiting the feedback from Mirrorstone though I’m worried what scienceprincess said about Wind, Bear, and Moon. Plus, I sketched out the full five-book series that I originally planned. I’m also hoping the answer from Steampunk Magazine comes back positive; I am pretty happy with that story.

I also just got another story commission, which will help with my tight money problem. Nothing like writing a $100 story because someone likes your writing that much. Helps with the ego, you know.

Black Holes of Writing

You ever get the impression that what you do or what you write basically is falling into the Pit of Oblivion instead of being read, appreciated, and inspiring someone to say “damn, that’s cool” or “I see a problem…”?

I know that that is the nature of the Internet, but I keep getting this feeling that I’m doing something wrong. A good example, I did Glorious Saber #004 two weeks ago. On the The Freedom Stone forum, I posted it. After two weeks and sixty views, no comments. The last two stories I wrote were the same way, 80 views, no comments. On the other hand, others get comments every 20 or so views, which is what I consider a popular post. So, there is something different about my stuff and theirs. There is skill and talent, of course, but I don’t get a “you did this wrong” type of stuff. That’s happened to me a lot. I get comments that I’m a great writer (and apparently have a reputation in some non-marketable fields) but then the comments just… stop. No more comments, no more complaints. There is something about my writing that just inspires people not to respond. And this is in comparison to hundreds of other postings in the same forum.

Lovely Problems Starting…

Well, things seem to be starting toward a brief spat of annoying things. We came home to find our refridgerator appears to be not working properly. In fact, it is not keeping cold things cold. And, since I like to believe I’m not in a consumable environment, I decided to call on an appliance repair instead of just going out and buying a new one. Hopefully, it is something small and insignificant, or my already taxed bank account will be more taxed.

Also, I think we changed things a bit too much for our kitties. We want to try toilet training them, but they haven’t really gotten going so far. We tried setting up boxes in the bathrooms but they aren’t using it yet. I might try a more normal-looking box if I have to go out for a new fridge today.

One of my lights in my office (1 of 4 + a fan) that is on the switch died last night. It was only a 30 USD lamp, but I like a very well-lit office (1-150 equiv watt florescent, 2-75 equiv watt florescent, and a 5-bulb chandelier, 40 watts each). Haven’t gotten the chandelier in florescent mainly because I just recently found small bases for those. Yeah, I like bright rooms, but it hurts to work in dim rooms for me.

We also moved their cat food. It used to be on the sun porch, which is rather hot and humid. One of our kitties, Trillian, didn’t appear to be eating there, so we moved it inside. Now, only one of the cats is eating from it. This morning was the first time I saw Chloe actually eating from it and I had to put her there. Paks (short for Paksenarrion) is the only one who appears to actually be eating from it. I’ll buy a new bag of cat food and see if the low allergy stuff rotted on the sun porch (which is possible) or spoiled. Again, if I go out to get a new fridge.

Other than that, I updated my theme for mfgames.com. Its a much different them than I’m normally used to, but it was inspired by a few things. One, dark themes require less energy to display than white themes. Yeah, the savings will be about 0.000000001 USD per page, but every little bit helps and I think it is the right direction to go. Also, I thought it had a quaint look to it. Later, I’m going to write some Javascript to change the top part based on the time of day, that way if you visit the site at night, you’ll get a night scene or something.

It also leads into my plans for today (barring the refrigerator): to create a comic updating script to see if I can queue up some of these comics and get ahead. Fightertype has been pressing me to first do ten ahead, then start releasing them. However, my lack of confidence in creating visual arts means I’ll be releasing them as soon as I finish, or on a Thursday schedule, whatever is slower. I appear to be reinventing the wheel, mainly because I couldn’t find any good comic updating scripts on Freshmeat and it isn’t that much work to do something that gives me the features I want: queued updates, script breakdown, comments, and potential language translations. It is unlikely that this will be popular, but it is things I think are important.

Running Exalted at GenCon

You know, I should get off my ass and get some of that bike riding done this year. I really should. But, not today. Actually, I wanted to mention about my two games at GenCon. Both of them were related to each other, the 29th Tepet Legion invading the Two Firs area to hunt down a single lone Anathema. Yeah, right. It ended up being five Solars and one Lunar involved, or would have been if I scaled the adventure correctly.

Apparently, unlike some of you, I don’t use my computer during my vacations or during GenCon. :) So, after six days of enjoying myself, I’m finally back from another wonderful trip. I left on Wednesday morning and came back a few hours ago, here on Monday. This was the first time I’ve ever run a game at GenCon (Exalted of course) and I had some really cool news from the end of it.

Haven’t gotten much writing, biking, or anything done really. Spent most of last night and a few hours of this morning (i.e. 02:00) working on grouting, tiling, and painting. Soon, soon it shall be done. Right in time for GenCon! :) Just need to work on comics, Debian, and a whole slew of other things before next week.

In other news, I’m thirty-two today. Pretty happy about it, lots of really nice “happy birthdays” throughout the day. Overall, a good day.

Oh, speaking of comics, I apparently forgot to post Glorious Saber 002 and 003. I really need to finish up the mfgames.com theme and get this on a scheduler.
