Lethe’s Yarn, Sickness, and TEoP

Sadly, I got a rejection (PC term: was passed on) for my Edge of Propinquity submission. I asked for a bit of feedback, but I was still hoping it was a great story. Oh well, its frustrating but not impassable. I’ll start it a few more times, see if I can polish it a bit more and find a new home for it. It would be nice to have something published this year.

Still sick. I took Tuesday off and came in Wednesday. However, by Wednesday night, I was completely floored again and ended up sleeping most of Thursday. At in over 20 hours of sleep, right after sleeping 30+ hours two days before. I think I’m sick. Fluffy says so, so it must be true.

Which, of course, means I couldn’t really work on Lethe’s Yarn. I got a little bit of code here and there, but it was only for a few hours instead of a nice six to ten hour marathon as I hoped. Stupid body and reality. But, I got a fair amount done in those few hours and I’m feeling pretty good about at least getting a “tech demo” up by the end of the weekend. Having the game contest extended another hour won’t hurt, but I’m not going to overdo it. Just put in a few hours and see what comes up.

In theory, there are another two writing contests due this weekend which I haven’t even started. Not sure if I’ll get to them. Too many projects I want to do, and the mind and body are apparently weak. :( It was bad enough, I actually did a midnight run to get drugs (and a LEGO set to play with until said drugs kicked in).

Illness, Kitties, and Programming

Why do I like the comma before the conjunctions? Why? One of the largest arguments I had in grammar was “a, b, and c” or “a, b and c”? And, in the end, it depends on the environment since both are considered right for a given medium.

But, the last day has been less than stunning. I got rather sick two days ago and it went right into yesterday. For the first time in this new job, I actually called in sick and felt guilty as all hell… right up to the point where I passed out and went back to sleep for another ten hours.

When I got up, I putzed a bit on the computer, then went to visit my kitties and FiL for a few hours before heading home. He made me bacon-wrapped cheeseburgers for dinner. Yummy. The cats missed me greatly, one of them plastered herself against my lap for better part of an hour while the others circled around like sharks in chummed water. I just sat on the floor and petted them for a long time. And, to show my love, cleaned the litter box too.

In the drive there, visiting the cats, and the drive back, I got to thinking. Mostly about the projects I’m doing after Lethe’s Yarn, but also about Lethe’s Yarn. It is due on the 31st of this month and I probably will only get about 15% of what I wanted done actually done. Would have been 25% but not with being sick.

And not with my realization that I don’t like something major about the game. In specific, this is a game where the world is broken down into cubes. Mostly 10 or 2 meters cubes, but when it is rendered on the screen, they are more like bumps instead of square. Not to mention, the 400 MB size of the file isn’t even remotely needed, and that frustrates me. So, I’m going to risk the deadline even more and go back and revamp that part of the game. It will require me to wrap my head around 3D graphics even more, but it should work out in the end. We’ll find out, I’m going to give myself until Friday to make the world a better place. :)

Weekend of Coding!

Imagine that, I programmed this weekend. But, against all expectations, I actually didn’t work that hard. Yeah, I’m burning out and trying too hard. I always hate it when my expectations doesn’t actually match my actual skill. Its closer though. Lethe’s Yarn got a lot further than Running Bomb and I suspect that if I keep with it, it will turn out to be a pretty nice little game.

And I have a little flash movie demo of the game!

On Sunday, I ended up stopping at 17:00 and just watching movies and playing with a new computer program. I found a visitor tracking program called Piwik, which works like Google Analytical and lets you see who is visiting your site and what they are doing. It is… addictive to watch. One of my personal sites get continual traffic and it is just fun watching the search terms show up and seeing the page counters. I’ve long since hit a million page hits on that site, so I’m resetting the counter and just going to watch the traffic filter through. Just fun, and the flash graphics are amazing.

After next weekend, I’m going to set it aside for a while. I need to seriously focus on writing and finishing projects instead of obsessing about new ones. I also started bringing back the chat rooms while I program; something I haven’t had in three months because of the flood.

Project Overload

I suspect I’m going through project overload as I recover my life from the flood, moving, and even GenCon. I’ve seemed to dropped the Debian stuff, at least for a long while, and I’m still struggling to do everything else. Which means, I need to consolidate some of my projects and work on getting things done instead of staring new projects (Lethe’s Yarn, *cough*). I also have the website designs I want to do, a few other websites to clean up, and getting ready to write stories. One might think I have ADD from the sheer number of projects I start in.

I also got the Wii from Illinois, so I have a fancy imitation fitness machine that I actually struggle to complete. So, as long as I can’t do the yoga tree position, I’m going to try doing 30 minutes a day on that and see if I can’t at least get my BMI down below 30 in a reasonable period of time, only 9.1 points to go. My actual goal is 25 (yeah, I know its officially overweight by 0.1 point, but 22.5 is my “ideal” BMI but a bit on the skinny side).

Oh well, I’ll just break things down, try to set aside the Lethe’s obsession for a few short hours, and try to knock off at least one thing not related to the game contest due in a week and two days.

Yeah, I’m doomed to fail.

Internets

Sadly, I has no Internets. I apparently haven’t had them since it went out the Monday night before I went to GenCon. And, like about 30% of the time, it just simply never came back in the week I was gone. When I got back on Tuesday, it was down, but I didn’t know about the week, so I gave it another day. Yesterday, I called since I still didn’t have any Internet, when I obviously should.

A couple things came out of that conversation.

  1. I hate that I have to give up another half day of vacation just to get my Internet back.
  2. Apparently I had a discontinued modem before I got it in the first place.
  3. MediaComm is one month away from getting replaced with DSL.

If I want to have a working Internet in the next two weeks, I must drive to the MediaComm office and get it replaced. Which means I have to skip lunch today and leave early since I really can’t take off more than the day I already have to get this damn thing running. I shouldn’t be taking significant percentage of my vacation time to get something working for more than two weeks! *sigh*

I’m getting frustrated.

In related news, I really hate how Internet is handled at the Sheraton hotel. Its a great hotel at GenCon, but they charge $12/day for access to a relatively slow Internet. I pay $20/month for my access here and I’ll pay $40/month for reliable DSL if MediaComm blows me off again. But, $12 a day!? We really should be at a point where Internet is free in the bigger-scale hotels. I mean, I get it free from the Windham and a ton of other places, but this $12/day is just silly. And their “business center” has the obvious signs of people installing random crap on the machines (i.e. installers on the desktop). I would think if you are paying $200/day for a hotel, they could give you free Internet.

Travel Time is Over

Well, finally got back to my apartment in Iowa last night. Long, long drive and I kind of got sick from the heat, but things are back to normal. 35 important emails at work, no Internet at home, yeah, pretty much exactly what I expected.

One thing that came up, besides an incredible desire to write (novels and games), was business cards. For two years, I had little hand-printed business cards. And I never used them. This year, I thought they looked a bit ratty and tossed them. Naturally, I had a bunch of people asking for them this year. Note to self, bring cards next year.

Oh yeah, and produce at least one thing to justify the “Moonfire Games” on my badge. :)

GenCon was a blast. Fluffy got a reward for having the “single most destructive act at the con” in Killer Bunnies and I got to talk nearly constantly. Not to mention a ton of books to read, which I’ll start up next month after Lethe’s Yarn obsession dies off.

Speaking of Lethe’s Yarn, I did just a little bit of work on it last night. Mainly getting the console working for the user. I only implemented the tgm (god mode) and tcl (collisions) for debugging, but it was on my list of things to do. Then, I managed to burn two hours working on reorganizing my MfGames utility libraries (again) and writing a little SWF front end for the settings editor. Tonight, I’m hoping to get a bit better user display for the world (depending on Internet for downloads of course) and working on the editor (which is choking on the files). I also found a way of doing in-place file updates for zip archives so I can maybe get rid of the 2000+ files I’m creating and consolidate them down to reasonable levels (i.e. 1).

GenCon, Day One and Two

I love my job. I really do. It isn’t that it has anything to do with this convention, but has everything to do with the fact I’m relaxed so quickly and enjoying myself so fast that I have to attribute to getting paid on time, enjoying the work and challenge, and basically being proud of myself.

I managed to blow through my entire budget in about three hours by starting at one end of the Author’s Alley and going to the other. And pretty much picking up every single book I didn’t already have. Amazingly, a lot of authors actually remembered my face long before they realized I was ‘dmoonfire’ or ‘Dylan Moonfire’ which is just neat. And, one of the authors gave me a free copy of their book so I could review it.

Okay, that floored me. You can get free books for doing reviews? Well, that was even more impressive. I also managed to throw a wrench in some of the author’s actions since three (including dear Anton) didn’t know they were suppose to fill out little slips of paper. So, they got educated on how to fill it out, then I brought up my neatly filled paper… and the cashier refused to handle it. Going back, I just handed them cash and got my books. Sometimes, I’m not sure if Anton likes me or doesn’t like me because of the review, but I think he does and I’ll probably give his sequel, which I’m looking forward to, the same quality. But, still, I want to smooze the authors not upset them. :)

I also have a 0.6 m high pile of new books to read. *squee*

I also had another wrench since I looked for Ms. Nilles. I knew she was going to have an empty table, and I noticed her name on the cash register. After circling the authors like a shark, and the artists, I asked.

“There is no one by that name.”
“Yes, you have it on the register.”
“No, we don’t.”
“Row five, eight from the left.”
“No, I swear we… don’t… oh, there she is.”

Sadly, Melanie decided to make it a challenge to find her, but I’m a persistent little bugger. :) Any other GenCon goers who want to meet?

As for games. I’ve had one no-show (Facehuggers and Chestbursters) which I managed to get into a playtest, out of the playtest, and into a game as other gamers went to the first playtest. Then played a 1930′s ghostbuster–as a cockney thief who was assigned to the lord in charge of the ghost hunters. I also did Runequest, but I didn’t like it as much and the mechanics were really stupid about facing. Did you know humans need to circle around 3 meters to turn around? Or, they need to spend one entire action to make a 30 degree turn. And another to pull the sword out. I think they need two for chewing gum and walking, but I’m not sure.

Traveler was awesome, in the first two rounds of character creation, I managed to destroy a ship and start a war. After that, every round I kept picking up medic, so we decided that my character was the reason that everyone on the ship kept needing medic. I also stole something from Mr. Walsh and started making up “100 Things Derelict (my character) Cannot Do”. #17 – “Is not allowed to take off the warning sticker from the explosive decompression handle next to the brake.” #34 – “Is not allowed on any space station with glass windows.” #81 – “Is not to be left in a room with anything that does ‘Do Not Touch’.” #87 – “Is not allowed to drink while docking.” Great inspiration, Glen, and it had everyone rolling in the aisle.

And then I did “Introduction to DragonStorm.” Which consisted of 3 old players with the equiv of 20th, 18th, and 15th level with 3 1st level players. Guess who did all the fighting, telepathy, magic, tanking, killing, and exploring? *sigh* Crappy room, okay DM, lousy party balance.

Overall, having a fairly good time. Most of my games were 1-2 hours short, one was 2 hours long, and I got in about an hour of swimming.

Oh yeah, and the writing panels where I think I did everything absolutely wrong. :)

Packed up, ready to go

If it wasn’t for this damn work thing, I’d already be on my way. Got six days worth of clothes in my back, probably forgot something important, my laptop in my brand new backpack, no gaming books (why bother?), and a bag full of dice. I even went through and removed the dice I didn’t like anymore.

As soon as I get out of work, I’m heading to visit some kitties, change some kitty litter, and then to Illinois for a night of MythTV repair and Wife Cuddle Updates (WCU). And probably then some doggy visits, and wandering out somewhere near noon on Wednesday for the convention; can’t check in until 15:00 anyways (though they’ll probably let us in early).

I also made a pretty schedule of everything that I might be going to, mostly of the friends who posted their schedules, such as the very busy Anton and slightly less busy Dylan. If I do everything (I won’t), then I’ll be solid every day. As such, I’ll probably be browsing at least a little bit and maybe picking up some new game books to read. And novels, oh, I’ll probably get one of everything again this year; that was fun.

After 33 birthdays, I get LEGO’s!

Have a very nice little birthday. Fluffy was there, didn’t leave the apartment. Got to program alone, watch movies with her, and cuddle. And she got me a 700 piece box of LEGO bricks to play with. *squee* Soon, I’ll get a much larger collection (I hope) and I’m already planning what I can do with them. At the moment, I want to try making a Warhammer Quest board with it, then maybe running my own game because all things Warhammer are depressing (3 in 6 chance you lose everything while leaving the dungeon, per week, for 1d6 weeks). Though, the idea of making my own board games and trying them out sounds like a lot of fun. I have a couple of ideas and it would be neat to have little LEGO minifigs running around something I created.
