Ukiyo is a rather impetuous urban culture that has bloomed in popularity. Although the Japanese were more strict and had many prohibitions it did not affect the rising merchant class and therefore became a floating art form that did not bind itself to the normal ideals of society.

People that chose Ukiyo-e art tend to be more simplistic yet elegant. They don't care much about new style but are comfortable in creating their own. They like the idea of living for the moment and enjoy giving and receiving pleasure. They may be more agreeable than other people and do not like to argue. They do not mind following traditions but are not afraid to move forward to experience other ideas in life. They tend to enjoy nature and the outdoors. They do not mind being more adventurous in their sexual experiences. They enjoy being popular and like being noticed. They have their own unique style of dress and of presenting themselves. They may also tend to be more business oriented or at the very least interested in money making adventures. They might make good entrepreneurs. They are progressive and adaptable.

Well, I finally figured out how to get a picture out of my cellphone. Interestingly, this is going to get me in a lot more trouble in the future, but we'll leave that one alone for a little bit. So, here is the meme:

take a picture of yourself right now.
don't change your clothes, don't fix your hair... just take a picture.
post that picture with NO editing.
post these instructions with your picture.

I can't describe how much I want to edit this picture. As usual, click on it for the full picture.

Place you grew up

Place you live now

Your school

Your work

Favourite food

Favourite drink

Favourite song

Favourite smell

Favourite shoes

Favourite movie

Favourite color

Favourite game

Favourite animal

Favourite mythological creature

And, since I have to be annoying:

Favorite random number generator

And this is going to be image happy, so we'll throw that behind the cut.

Where I grew up. Wow, this is completely non-remarkable:

Where I live now:

My school, probably the only place that really jump up as being a 'school' to me. Sadly a place with a crisis a few years back (teachers sleeping with students), so its became notable enough to show up on Wikipedia.

Where I work, yeah, its obscure:

And related to my favorite drink:

Monday... er, Tuesday Zombie Meme

A little meme for a Monday brought to you on Tuesday from Allison Fraclose:

You are in a mall when the zombies attack. You have:

One weapon.

One song blasting on the speakers.

One famous person (real or fictitious) to fight alongside you.

Well, for weapon, I'd have to go with the sharp pointy thing, my favorite sword: the wakizashi. I mean, its a great weapon for decapitating, I found it easier to work with when I was in sword-fighting classes and it is a bit more maneuver in the eventual fight in narrow tunnels underneath the mall. Not to mention, when you have the just as predictable attack while seducing the main character, you don't have to fumble around with the sheets. Failing that, baseball bat. Because, nothing says love like the hollow sounds of crushed zombie skulls.

For a song, Earl Must Die by the Dixie Chicks. Just because I love that song, even on repeat.

Famous person with zombies? Probably have to go with Alice from Resident Evil. I'd go with Fluffy, not only for the whole couple slaughtering zombies thing but also because she would be the main character and I could seduce her guilt-free. I mean, she's cute, sweet-looking but brutal. Main character material. :D

Writing Methodologies

Got this little meme from Diana Pharaoh Francis and it looked like fun.

How do you do it? By this I mean a bit about your process. Do you work off of a "pages per day" kind of deal--with a bare minimum of what you need to do for the day to be accomplished? A word count? Plot? Ive heard different people do it different ways. Laurell K. Hamilton:4 pages a day, Stephen King: 2,000 words. I've been on a 1,000 a day kick and I've found it good for me (actually, a friend and I challenge one another to see how much we can write in twenty minutes, it's kind of fun...but I digress)

part two of the question formatting -- what does yours look like? When you're working on a work-in-progress. Times new roman? double space? single?

Its kind of a weird question but when i see someone say, "i write five pages a day" Courier New and Times New Roman are pretty different.

Can you shed some light on your writerly ways?

For me, I'll start with the font. Courier New at 12 point font, double-spaced, zoomed up to 300%. I like the typewriter look to the font and it is the font I'm most comfortable with. I keep the zoom up high to make me focus on the words I'm writing, not the paragraph before or after. Just kind of like a "Now" thing when I write. I also use "web view" (or Normal in Word) so it doesn't scroll. I also use exactly 1" margins on all sides, with a header and footer of 0.2". (As a slight comment, for some reason, I dislike Times New Roman intensely.)

When I write novels, I use one file per chapter because OpenOffice.org sometimes burps on the very long documents. I have a master document which includes all the chapters, so when I open it, it slurps in all the chapters and formats them properly. It also lets me backup stuff and see how I'm doing; I can write a program to process counts per chapter or to see if I have notes to myself. I use the "Notes" paragraph style for TODOs and WTFs, then have a program that finds them and puts them in a list. Makes it easier when dealing with 30-50 chapters.

As for goals, I use hours. I write at a relatively steady pace, about 2k words per hour, so I try to write for at least an hour. Given that I write for two, the rest of it is for playing games, browsing the web, and trying to gather my thoughts together. My best rate is 4k words per hour, but I burn out pretty heavily. When I did DL, I aimed for a chapter a day. In reality, what happened was I wrote 2-3 chapters, then wrote nothing for a few days, then rinse, lather, and repeat. So, basically I keep my goals on a week level, such as 10k words in a week. That handles my ebbs and flows of creativity, coupled with all my other projects. *cough*

Five Things

I love the meme, specially fun ones like this one I stole from Tiffany Trent.

What were you doing five years ago?

Hrm, five years ago I was switching jobs back to the place I worked for fifteen years before. It wasn't the choice I wanted, but at the time, the market was horrible and I needed something. I was also enjoying the high of my first published novel (another byline). I believe it was also the point that I was asked to write a novel for a friend that she could "show my brother."

What are five things on your to-do list for today (not in any particular order)?

Get the speakers and TV out of the back of my car.

Finish up the remains of Running Bomb so I can say I submitted it.

Work out for at least 15 minutes.

Send out the "comment for free copy of my book" that I promised.

Go to bed on time.

The sleeping thing is still hard for me, which is why its on the list of things to do.

What are five snacks you enjoy?

Diet Coke. It food, damn it. *sigh* The shakes are already starting.

Trail mix.

Nutty bars... yummy.

McDonald's Chicken Nuggets.

Canned (but not fresh) peaches and pears.

What five things would you do if you were a billionaire?

The debt thing, obviously.

Build an island, not buy, build.

Become a full-time novelist and game writer.

Donate a hell of a lot of money to web comics and people I enjoy who do things for free.

Support a lot of open-sourced projects.

What are five of your bad habits?

Obsession on the project of the week.

I don't exercise enough. Need to lose more weight.

I worry about money too much.

I worry about my talent as a writer.

I don't get angry or excited really. Even when I'm "excited" it isn't really that excited.

What are five places where you have lived?

Iowa City, IA, USA

Cedar Rapids, IA, USA

Carpentersville, IL, USA

Mount Prospect, IL, USA

West Chicago, IL, USA

What are five jobs you've had?

Vice President

Senior Developer

Human Resources

Technical Writer

Husband (take-home pay is crap and Fluffy doesn't report my earnings to the IRS either.)

Just a little meme that looks like fun. It comes from this post. This is from page 123 of Wind, Bear, and Moon which happens to be a chapter break (number 27 if you are interested). Feel free to read it, comment, or even just go "wtf are you talking about?". :)

The forest lit up with the sounds and and sights of morning. Birds called out to one other as the fog lingered near the roots of the trees. Above, the sky was streaked with clouds; darker masses were boiling in the west. Rain hung in the air, threatening the day to come.

Still weak, Sonia stumbled with almost every step. The pain from the sword cut had faded, and only the slash in her dress reminded her how close she came to dying. Self-consciously, she dropped her hand to her stomach and felt the thin line of a scar. She frowned at the thought, remembering the agony of it cutting deep. Every muscle in her body felt sore and exhausted, but she still walked.

Her eyes slid to the right, watching Dyfan match her steps as he stared out into the woods. His light delicate scent teased her senses, like a flower just over the corner. On the other hand, Welf managed to keep up with her, breathing heavily as he climbed over logs and through the underbrush. She noticed his arm seemed different, a silvery shimmer to it, and he kept rubbing it. She wondered if it hurt but somehow the silver tracery seemed familiar, like the clouds that haunted her dreams.

Sonia paused for a second, then forced herself to keep on walking before Welf questioned her. Memories of the sky-filled world drifted, and she wondered if it were a dream or something else.

“Sonia, are you okay?”

Sonia jumped as the smells as Welf came closer. Concern radiated from his body as he rested one hand on her arm. She shivered at the sensation, feeling a fluttering in her heart.

“I-I’m okay, nothing wrong.”

“If you are sure...”

He didn’t sound convinced so Sonia wagged her tail. It was obvious to her she lied to him, but Welf didn’t seem to notice. He gave her a shy smile, then focused on climbing around a large rock. She watched him, embarrassed from the attention.

Welf made everything better, although she didn’t know how. She remembered feeling blood on her stomach then the endless sky. She didn’t know how she woke up in the night with Welf clutching her tightly and whispering out her name. The sadness in his voice started her whimpering, and she clamped down on it. The words of the wind rose up in her mind, distracting her.

Wind daughter.

It didn’t make sense, but it gave her something to puzzle over as she struggled through roots and rough ground. Her toes hurt; the soles of her feet hurt; everything hurt. Her feet were blistered, and she wanted desperately to stop, but there was no way she could. She couldn’t fail Welf as he tried so carefully to get them home safely. Even Dyfan’s silent looks pushed her forward and helped her to endure the suffering.

This is actually one of those pauses after a major event in the story. It deals with the realization that the teenagers are changing in the story, one of them with a near-death experience and the other who is beginning to suffer under the effects of being a healer. In this case, the silver tattoos are influenced by Ann Maxwell, who wrote Firedancer and Dancer's Luck, one of those books that influences me.

It is also a time of secrets. Sonia doesn't know how far she was hurt (actually, it wasn't a "near death" experience and more of a "dead" experience) and Welf hasn't figured where the tattoos came from. So, it is that uncomfortable period where two teenagers are gaining magical powers and neither has the social skills to really communicate it with each other. Dyfan, the third teen, is quietly working out his own troubles with the forest spirits, but he doesn't talk normally so it is less of an issue but still haunting him.

Not to mention, Sonia, the dog girl, and Welf, the baron's son, are kind of falling for each other despite the class differences.

Fictional Dinner

Apparently its going to be a double-post day today because I saw a meme. And have a meme, must do a meme. :) Actually, it looks like a fun one and I want to see what my answers would end up being. This came from Alana Joli Abbott's journal. Which fantasy characters would I invite to dinner?

Paksenarrion (from Elizabeth Moon's omnibus edition of the same name). Well, that one is a pretty obvious one, that novel is the very top of my favorite novels and probably one of the major influences in my life, gaming, and writing.

Ged from Ursula K. Le Guin's Wizard of Earthsea. If Paksenarrion is the most influential female character in my writing, Ged is the most influential male. I've read that book annual for over twenty years and have most of it memorized.

Simon from Anton Strout's Dead to Me. However, I'd have to fight the urge to follow him around with a bowl of sugar treats going "touch this! touch that!". But, ignoring that, he has a smart-ass attitude that I think I'd love to hear him tell stories. He'll hate me in about ten seconds flat.

Cutter from ElfQuest. Yeah, I like the short men. Specially with that hair pulled back like that. Actually, it has more to do with how he grew through the story and the amazing things he saw.

Queen Betsy from Undead and Unwed. Because she just rocks.

The shadow horse from Richard A. Knaak's series of dragons. Because nothing says good dinner guest like a horse who can eat dragons, is the living embodiment of death, and still manages to be a smart ass.

Pip and Flinx from Alan Dean Foster's series. Somehow, he managed not to go emo after all of his adventures. But, the flying snake isn't eating near my fingers.

Evan Orgell from Sentenced to Prism, also by Alan Dean Foster. This book is the baseline for all other books when I come to reviewing. I can read it in an hour and it is on the very short list of novels I can't read anymore because I have it memorized nearly word for word. Even after waiting five years, I still can't read it.

Seras Victoria from Hellsing. Not just because she's a hot vampire with a BIG ASS CANNON for her weapon, but... no, that's pretty much it.

Goury and Lina Inverse from Slayers. Yeah, they are two different characters, but I still think they are a couple. He's a lovable oaf managed to hide one of the most powerful weapons in existence behind a veneer of idiocy and she... well, if I can survive a Dragonslave, I'll be a very happy man.

There are more, but I took off a few characters because I couldn't remember their name. Namely the thief from Alana's series, because she interests me more than any other character into that book. And Bones from Halfway to the Grave. And the two women from Nina, I so desperately want to know how life turned out for them. There is also a couple others. And I'm not entirely sure if Ricewind's luggage is someone you'd ever invite to dinner, but I still want to meet it. And Piffiny from Nodwick... damn it, I want to meet too many characters. :)

Mememememing

It's meme time! Now... stop. Meme time! Okay, silly 80's references gone (I mean, I can't believe he didn't eat the sushi!), I actually got tagged for a little Internet meme. Naturally, that means I must do it or I'll... be eaten by a slug or something.

a) What issues/topic interests you most--non-fiction, i.e, cooking, knitting, stitching, etc?

Everything. Mainly programming, graphics, and fonts. Oh, and games. All types of games. Yeah, they are fiction, but the process of making games isn't. :P Oh, and spiritualism, religion. Mapping/cartography, low-level physics, psychology (in specific linguistics), politics, methodologies for measurements (metric system, different time calculations), Debian, Linux, the process of making fiction, yeah, that's what I initially come up with. :)

b) Would you like to review books concerning those?

Actually, I love doing reviews. Its one of those really interesting things because it changes how you look at stuff. Though I haven't done much with non-fiction at this point, mainly because I haven't had a chance.

c) Would you like to be paid or do it as interest or hobby? Tell reasons for what ever you choose.

Well, one of my day jobs is suppose to be identifying the pros and cons of commercial hardware and platforms. So, yeah, I'd love to get paid to do reviews. Even if I don't, though, I'll still do it as a hobby.

d) Would you recommend those to your friends and how?

Depends on if I got paid. You see, if I got paid, I wouldn't recommend it to friends. Mainly as a conflict of interest. If I don't, then I do. Yeah, most of the time, they don't care because my friends only usually match me on one aspect of my life. Not even my wife shares such a wide range of interests.

e) If you have already done something like this, link it to your post.

Non-fiction? Can't help there, but I do have a tag just for reviews on my blog. Naturally I felt it important to create said tag, but I really do like doing reviews.

http://brokentypewriterpress.com/blog/category/reviews/

f) Please don't forget to link back here or whoever tags you.

(Don't use lj tags on my personal blog, sorry, they just don't autopopulate)

liz-dejesus

And to get this meme moving, you have to tag 10 people. I tag:

Bah, I refuse. :P Mainly because I think everyone was already selected and I don't have that many people to tag. But, anyone want to pretend I tagged them?

Purple falls under the element of Earth, and was once a European symbol of royalty; today it symbolizes the divine.

Spent last night working more on BooGame. It's getting there, but the problem when you have two libraries very tightly tied together is that it takes a lot to abstract one away. I just hope the decisions I'm making and what I'm doing is going to make CuteGod more stable (it crashes a lot on Windows and I can't use it on Linux lately).

Going to be an interesting weekend. Going to a comedy club tonight with Fluffy and Evyl. Tomorrow I have gaming, which should be leading into the final bits of Arc 3. Trying to organize the plots a bit more using FreeMind. Maybe this will be the Ultimate Plot Management Tool, I've been seeking. Heh, I'm also looking for the Ultimate Map Management Tool but haven't found one yet.

Okay, most of you won't care about this in the slightest bit. LOLcode is a programming language based on LOLcats, which is just a silly meme. But the code was hilarious and I just had to post a little bit of it. This is valid programming code:

HAI
CAN HAS STDIO?
PLZ OPEN FILE "LOLCATS.TXT"?
	AWSUM THX
 VISIBLE FILE
	O NOES
 INVISIBLE "ERROR!"
KTHXBYE

Yeah, it's silly, but just neat you can do it. The fact someone came up with this, not to mention visual debugging, highlighting of errors and everything else is just neat. Okay, on more:

HAI
CAN HAS STDIO?
I HAS A VAR
IM IN YR LOOP
	UP VAR!!1
	VISIBLE VAR
IZ VAR BIGGER THAN 10? KTHXBYE
IM OUTTA YR LOOP
KTHXBYE

This is a CIL (.NET) language which means it runs on Windows, Linux, and the Mac.

Meme - About Me?

Do you know where memes are about? Wonderful concept, since it includes everything from architecture and colors to minor little things like viral Q&A across the blogs. Well, I'm doing one just because I find them fun on occasion:

Comment and I'll--

Tell you why I friended you.

Associate you with something. A fandom, a song, a color, a piece of fruit. SOMETHING.

Tell you something I like about you.

Tell you a memory I have of you.

Associate you with a character/pairing.

Ask something I've always wanted to know about you. (Or else I'll just ask a random question. I reserve that right.)

Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.

In all honesty, I don't care if you continue this. It's just an interesting idea on social networking and self-propagating social units. Though, in this case, you can thank zenbodhi for initiating it.
