There was only one author I have ever written a letter to. It was for my grade school class and I wrote to her, thanking her for creating what was at the time, my favorite story of all time: A Wrinkle in Time. I never got a response. Even though I don't mourn people's death (very much), she was one of the many influences that got me to write. So, I appreciate everything she has done for me, even though she has never met me.
